Gel, Acrylic or Gel Polish Nails: Which Should You Choose?
What each technique really is, how long it lasts, whether it damages your nails, and which one suits you, with real Las Palmas prices.
"Should I get gel, gel polish, or try acrylic?" It's the question we hear most at VS Nails & Beauty the first time someone sits down for a manicure. The short answer: it depends on how long you want it to last, whether you're after colour only or extra length too, and the current condition of your natural nail.
The three words get used as if they were interchangeable, but they're different techniques, with different materials, and a different impact on nail health. In this guide we explain the real difference between gel, gel polish and acrylic, why our salon works with gel/acrygel instead of pure acrylic, how long each option lasts, whether it damages your nails, and which one suits your lifestyle.
You'll find us at C. Párroco Francisco Rodríguez Rodríguez 63 in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, near Mesa y López and Playa de Las Canteras.
What's the Real Difference Between Gel, Acrylic and Gel Polish?
Gel polish is a coloured lacquer that cures under a lamp and only coats the natural nail; hard gel is a thicker resin that can be used as a reinforced finish or to add structure and length; acrylic is a polymer mixed on the spot (powder + liquid) and is used almost exclusively for extensions. That difference in material is what decides how long each one lasts and how it needs to be removed.
Side by side, here's how they compare:
| Technique | What it is | How it hardens | Main use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gel polish | Coloured lacquer with special base and top coat | UV/LED lamp, 30–60 seconds per coat | Long-lasting colour on the natural nail |
| Hard gel | Thicker resin, clear or coloured | UV/LED lamp | Reinforced finish or extensions (with a form or tip) |
| Acrylic | Liquid monomer + powder mixed at application | Air-dries via a chemical reaction, no lamp | Very strong extensions |
At VS Nails & Beauty we work with hard gel for reinforced finishes and for extensions — what the industry calls acrygel: a resin that combines the strength of acrylic with the flexibility of gel. Here's why in the next section.
Why We Work with Gel (Acrygel) Instead of Pure Acrylic
Traditional acrylic is mixed with a strong-smelling liquid monomer and needs more mechanical filing to remove; gel cures under a lamp with none of that smell and is removed by softening it, not filing it down to the nail plate. That's why our salon uses gel and acrygel for extensions instead of pure acrylic.
Neither technique is "bad" when applied by a professional with good products — acrylic has been a strong, affordable option for long nails for decades. But for our clients, gel/acrygel has three advantages we consider decisive:
- No strong monomer smell during application, which clients especially appreciate on longer appointments.
- Gentler removal: gel is softened with acetone and lifts off in sheets; acrylic needs more mechanical filing to break down the polymer, which demands more skill to avoid thinning the natural nail.
- More flexible: acrygel absorbs everyday micro-impacts (keyboards, car doors, bags) better without cracking, while a very rigid acrylic transfers the knock straight to the natural nail.
If you search for "acrylic nails" and land on our page, here's what you'll actually find: gel/acrygel extensions with the same strength and length, applied by certified specialists. See all the options on our Nail & Pedicure Salon page.
How Long Each Option Really Lasts
Gel polish lasts 2–3 weeks, a hard gel reinforced finish 3–4, and gel/acrygel extensions need a fill every 3–4 weeks to keep up with natural nail growth. Traditional acrylic behaves similarly to gel extensions in terms of lifespan.
Real-world duration also depends on your routine: if you use your hands a lot for physical work (cleaning, cooking, crafts) you'll usually notice wear sooner than someone with an office job.
| Option | Average lifespan | Maintenance |
|---|---|---|
| Gel polish | 2–3 weeks | Removed and reapplied on the natural nail |
| Hard gel (reinforced finish) | 3–4 weeks | Removed and reapplied |
| Gel/acrygel extensions | 3–4 weeks per fill | Fill at the growth area, no full removal needed |
One factor changes the equation for all three techniques: a Russian manicure as the base. By removing the cuticle completely with a precision e-file, the polish or gel bonds right from the base of the nail, with no edge for water or soap to sneak under — adding several extra days of wear to any of the three options.
Does It Damage Your Nails? Myths and Reality
Neither gel, gel polish nor acrylic damages the natural nail on its own. Damage almost always comes from bad removal: peeling it off, prying it up or filing it down to the nail plate at home.
It's one of the industry's most common myths, and deserves a clear answer:
- "Gel weakens the nail": not if it's applied and removed correctly. The thinning sometimes seen after months of gel comes from aggressive removal, not from the product itself.
- "Acrylic is worse than gel": properly applied acrylic isn't inherently more damaging; it simply demands more skill to remove because it doesn't dissolve as easily as gel.
- "You need to let your nails rest every few months": there's no evidence nails need to "breathe". What they do need is cuticle care and moisture between sessions, polished or not.
The golden rule, the only one that really matters: never peel or pick it off at home. Doing so takes layers of the natural nail's keratin with it — that's the real damage, not the technique. Professional removal, softening it with acetone or dissolving it with the right tool, takes a few minutes and does no harm.
Which One Should You Choose for Your Nails and Lifestyle?
There's no single "best" option — there's a best option for you. These are the questions we ask during your first consultation to guide you:
- Are your nails currently short or weak? Start with gel polish on the natural nail. It's the lightest option and lets you see how your nails develop without committing to a fill.
- Do you want length or a specific shape (almond, square, ballerina)? You need gel/acrygel extensions — gel polish adds no structure, only colour.
- Do you use your hands a lot, or play high-impact sport? Gel/acrygel is more flexible and handles knocks better than very rigid acrylic.
- Do you have hand dermatitis or known resin allergies? Mention it before your appointment — some clients are sensitive to certain gel or acrylic ingredients, and it's best to patch-test one nail before a full set.
On the UV/LED lamp question, the one we're asked most: modern LED lamps emit a very low UV dose, comparable to a few minutes of direct sun, and only on the fingertips. If it still concerns you, you can ask for hand sunscreen or fingerless gloves before curing — we're happy to provide them.
