Electrolysis is the only 100% permanent hair-removal method recognised by the FDA, and like any precision treatment its results depend as much on what we do in the treatment room as on what you do at home. Preparing your skin properly beforehand and caring for it in the following days makes the difference between a quick, comfortable recovery and a few avoidable niggles.

At VS Nails & Beauty, on C. Párroco Francisco Rodríguez Rodríguez, 63, in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, next to the Alfredo Kraus Auditorium and Playa de Las Canteras, we have gathered everything you need to know in this step-by-step guide.

Treat it as your reference manual: what to do before, what is normal right after, how to care for the area during the first 72 hours, and how to protect your results between sessions under the Gran Canaria sun.

The golden rule (in one sentence)

Before your session, let the hair grow and don't remove it with wax or tweezers; afterwards, protect your skin from the sun and don't pick at the tiny scabs.

Everything else is a variation on these two ideas. Beforehand, we need the hair to be visible and in its growth phase so we can treat the follicle as effectively as possible; afterwards, your skin is healing on the surface and deserves calm, hydration and sun protection.

If you remember only this sentence, you are already on the right track. In the sections that follow we break down the detail so you arrive relaxed for your appointment and leave knowing exactly what to do.

Before your session: the do's and don'ts

Preparation starts weeks ahead, not on the day itself. The key is not to pull the hair out by the root: electrolysis works on the follicle through the hair itself, so we need it to be there.

    • Don't wax, tweeze or thread for 2–4 weeks before your session. Pulling the hair empties the follicle and leaves us without a target.
    • Shaving or trimming is allowed: you can shave up to 2–3 days beforehand so the hair is just the right length (visible but short).
    • Arrive with clean, make-up-free skin on the area to be treated. No heavy creams, oils or deodorant on the day.
    • Hydrate your skin well in the days before: elastic, healthy skin tolerates the treatment better.
    • Avoid the sun and self-tanners before the session. Burnt or irritated skin is not in a fit state to be treated.
    • Tell us your history: medication, allergies, a tendency to keloids, pregnancy or any skin condition. No detail is too small.

If you have any doubts about how to arrive prepared, your initial consultation is free and we can review your case before we begin. Book yours at Book appointment.

During the session and what's normal right after

We work with certified specialists and single-use sterile needles, inserting an ultra-fine probe into the follicle to deactivate it. You'll feel a mild warmth or a brief pinprick, perfectly tolerable.

Once we finish, it's completely normal for the skin to show one of these passing reactions:

    • Slight redness and warmth in the area, usually settling within a few hours.
    • Minor swelling or tiny pink dots around the treated follicles.
    • Tiny pinpoint scabs that may appear over the following 24–48 hours: they are part of the healing process and disappear on their own.

None of this should worry you. It's the sign that the treatment has worked. What matters now is supporting that healing with the right care, which we explain below.

The first 24–72 hours: your aftercare checklist

These are the hours that most influence a flawless recovery. The rule is simple: keep the area clean, calm and protected, and don't disturb it.

    DoAvoid
Apply aloe vera or the soothing product we recommendTouching, scratching or picking the scabs
Keep the skin clean with lukewarm water and mild soapMake-up on the area for ~24 h
Use high sun protection (SPF) every dayDirect sun, the beach or self-tanner
Loose, breathable clothing over the areaSauna, pool or sweaty gym sessions (24–48 h)
Let the scabs fall off on their ownExfoliants, retinoids or acids (for a few days)

Follow this routine for the first two or three days and you'll notice the skin recovers quickly and without marks. If anything ever feels off, message us or book a check-up at Book appointment.

Between sessions: protecting your results (and why you shouldn't go back to waxing)

Electrolysis is done over several sessions because hair grows in cycles and we only treat the active follicles at each visit. What you do between appointments is decisive if you don't want to take a step backwards.

    • Never go back to waxing, tweezing or threading: pulling the hair reactivates and distorts the follicles, lengthening your treatment. It's the most common mistake.
    • Shaving or trimming is fine whenever you need it: it doesn't interfere with the root or with your sessions.
    • Sun protection all year round. In Gran Canaria the sun is strong all twelve months; a daily SPF on the treated areas prevents hyperpigmentation and dark marks.
    • Keep the skin hydrated so it arrives in the best condition for your next appointment.

Think of electrolysis as a progressive investment: each session reduces the hair permanently, and respecting these guidelines makes the path shorter. You can learn about the whole process on our Electrolysis Hair Removal service.

Normal healing vs. when to check with us

The vast majority of reactions are normal and resolve on their own. Even so, it's worth knowing how to tell the expected apart from what warrants a call.

    • Normal: mild redness, warmth, minimal swelling and pinpoint scabs that fall off by themselves within a few days.
    • Worth checking with us: intense redness that doesn't ease after several days, increasing pain, discharge, signs of infection or any reaction that concerns you.

When in doubt, it's always better to ask. Our certified specialists are here to support you throughout the process, and the initial consultation is free, with no obligation.

If you're considering getting started or have questions about your skin, book your appointment whenever you like and we'll review it together.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Can I shave before an electrolysis session?
Yes. Shaving or trimming is allowed and even recommended so the hair arrives at just the right length: visible but short. What you must not do is pull it out by the root with wax, tweezers or thread during the 2 to 4 weeks beforehand, because electrolysis needs the follicle to still have hair in order to work.
Why can't I wax or tweeze between sessions?
Because pulling the hair out by the root empties and reactivates the follicles, which distorts the natural hair cycle and lengthens your treatment. Between sessions you can shave or trim without any problem, but never wax, tweeze or thread. It's the single biggest factor in whether the process is shorter or longer.
Is redness and scabbing normal? How long does it last?
Yes, it's completely normal. Slight redness and warmth are immediate and usually settle within a few hours. The tiny pinpoint scabs can appear in the following 24 to 48 hours and fall off on their own within a few days. You must not touch or pick them: they are part of the skin's natural healing.
When can I wear make-up or go to the beach again?
Avoid make-up on the treated area for about 24 hours. As for direct sun, the beach, the sauna or the pool, wait at least 24 to 48 hours and, when you do expose the skin again, always use high sun protection. In Gran Canaria the sun is strong all year, so SPF is your best ally.
How do I avoid dark marks or hyperpigmentation?
The key is protecting the skin from the sun while it heals. Use high sun protection daily on the treated areas, avoid direct exposure for the first 48 hours and don't pick the scabs. With this care and year-round SPF, the risk of hyperpigmentation is minimal.
